PRECONFERENCE: Family Strengths and Challenges Through a Lens of Trauma, Grounded in Attachment Theory

Thursday, April 5th, 8:30-11:00 a.m.

Amy L. Curtis, LBSW-IPR, LPC-S

Director of Counseling, Buckner Children and Family Services, Inc.

The Center for the Study of Social Policy has outlined five protective factors to strengthen those we serve; building parental resilience, enhancing social connections, providing knowledge of parenting and child development, giving concrete support in times of need and strengthening the social and emotional competency of children. Yet, how we respond in moments of need and stress are often impacted by our attachment patterns. Attachment patterns are intergenerational. How a parent responds in moments of stress is often how the child will learn to respond. Attachment begins in infancy and can be further impacted by traumatic events that occur in our lives.

Pre-conference fee is $40.00. A Continental Breakfast will be served.

CEUs will be included in the CEU cost for the conference.

OPENING PLENARY: Strengthening Families From the Inside Out: A Collaborative Model

Thursday, April 5th

Mervil Johnson, MPA

Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County

From 2011 thru 2015, Workforce Solutions was awarded a four-year 8.4 million dollar grant by the Department of Health & Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. This represented the largest single grant awarded to Tarrant County’s Workforce board designed to enhance positive outcomes for children through interventions engaging fathers and other parents of primarily low-income children in Tarrant County. This pilot program consisted of a holistic service design featuring services to strengthen parenting skills, enhance economic stability and improve communication and relationships between parents as they cared for their children. This presentation will describe the service model used, outcomes achieved and lessons learned.

CLOSING PLENARY: The Sociocultural Context of Family Resilience

Friday, April 6th

Norma Perez-Brena, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

School of Family and Consumer Sciences, Texas State University

Her work examines the combination of sociocultural characteristics that generate resilience in families, in general, and Latino and immigrant families, in particular. She is also the Director of Strengthening Relationships/Strengthening Families, an intervention program aimed at strengthening adolescent parents’ relationship, coparenting, and job readiness skills. Dr Perez-Brena’s presentations will provide a broad perspective on what builds resilience in the face of various sociocultural stressors, and discuss the important role of the family and culture as two major mechanisms through which resilience is developed.
